Chocolate for breakfast! Now THIS is how you start a day!
My husband and I are very fond of oatmeal breakfast – with Apple cinnamon topping, with banana caramel topping, with dried fruits and nuts but nothing really beats the chocolate-y berry goodness of these Chocolate Oats with Dates and Fresh Fruits.
Oatmeal flavoured with cocoa and cinnamon, sweetened with dates and fresh fruit tastes like a very rich, creamy and comforting chocolate pudding. If you are crazy about the strawberry and chocolate combo like me or just want to make a health conscious person very happy in the morning, you will know that maybe this is the only way oats should be eaten!
The sweetness added by the chocolate, dates and fruits is on the healthier side. You can skip dairy milk and try almond or coconut milk instead too for a vegan version or if you are allergic to dairy. Choose from any seasonal fruits of your choice but if you can find strawberries, don’t miss them out!
It’s something you will want to make again and again and again! Good thing it’s so quick n easy. Stay healthy but still stay in touch with your sweet side.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup rolled oats (barley or wheat)
1+1/2 cup water
1 cup milk
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
6-7 dates (pitted) or honey to taste
2 tablespoons dark chocolate chips
Assorted fresh fruit (strawberries, bananas, apples, oranges)
This Is a What You Do:
In a small saucepan add water, dates and oats. Cook on medium heat till the dates are tender and oats have swelled up and absorbed all the water.
Dilute cocoa powder in milk and add to the oats. Add cinnamon.
Cook on medium low heat till the oats mixture is thick and creamy. Turn the heat off and cover the pan for 5 minutes, it makes the oatmeal creamier.
Pour Chocolate Oats into two bowls, top with sliced fruits of your choice and chocolate chips.
Serve warm.
