Planning a delicious and healthy family meal every day, thrice a day is not an easy job even for the most imaginative and passionate of home makers at times. Usually the ingredients are there in our fridge and larder but we stand there lost looking right at them, wondering what to do to make the coming meal exciting for everybody. And then suddenly one main ingredient clicks and things begin to take shape around it.

I came up with the idea for this Warm Curried Potato Salad on one such evening. I was planning to make some fish finger for dinner but it needed a filling side dish that could make it a complete meal. After going through what I had readily available at home many times, I decided that the star of the dish had to be potatoes.

A warm salad is always a welcome addition to dinner at our place. So I decided to make a creamy salad dressing with tahini and lemon juice to make the salad comforting without being too heavy on the conscience. The crispy and flaky fish fingers could do with a side that had a little kick to it, something with heat to make it a cosy winter night dinner. Of course the spices added that instant punch of flavour, heat and aroma.

The Warm Curried Potato Salad was gobbled up in minutes and the bowls wiped clean with happy faces. And that is all what a home cook wants at the end of the day, right! It can be a perfect accompaniment for roasts for formal dinner or make delicious tapas served over crostini or stuffed inside pasta shells.

Ingredients:

3 medium potatoes
1 cucumber
1 carrot
1 medium onion
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon crushed chilli flakes
1 teaspoon cumin seeds (zeera)
1/2 Teaspoon fenugreek seeds (methi)
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds (raai)
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 tablespoons tahini ( sesame paste)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 green chilli pepper
A few leaves of fresh Coriander
Salt to taste
Iceberg or any salad leaves for serving

This Is What You Do:

Peel potatoes, cut into cubes and boil till done but still firm.

Peel cucumber and carrot and cut into thick slices.( you can also boil the carrots for a few minutes with potatoes if you like them a little tender).

Finely chop onion, green chillies and coriander leaves.

Mix tahini with lemon juice in a big mixing bowl. Add salt and dilute the mixture with 1/4 cup of warm water till you get a creamy consistency.

Add the potatoes, cumber and carrots to the tahini mix. Add chopped onions, green chillies and coriander.

Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds. When the seeds begin to splutter, add chilli flakes and turmeric and then immediately take off from the heat.

Pour this over the bowl of salad and give everything a good toss to mix.

To serve, layer the salad dish with your favourite salad greens and scoop the salad on top.

  1. Thanks for your reply?…. I would prefer home made as m on my weight loss journey so i think store bought tahini must be loaded with sodium n preservatives . Well thanks again ??

    1. Hi dear Neelam,
Tahini is simply sesame seed paste. You can blend sedans seeds with a little warm water to get the required creamy consistency or but ready made tahini which is easily available at Pakistani/middle eastern grocery stores.
      Happy cooking ?
