“Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes, and cooking. Its about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity.” – Guy Fieri
One of the best things kids can learn through cooking is to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their diet and enjoy eating them. Crumble is one of the easiest of dessert recipes in which you can use almost any fruit you fancy; apples, peaches, strawberries, cherries, pineapple, apricots are just a few suggestions to trigger your imagination.
Peach Crumble is the favourite in our house for its sweet n sour flavour. I’ve mostly used brown sugar in the recipe which gives the crumble a fudge-like taste. Kids love to make the crumble using their hands, if using electric food processor, please supervise and discuss the safety measures first. Always switch off and unplug the gadget before placing the food in or taking it out of the processor jug to avoid accidents. The whole recipe consists of basically mixing the ingredients in bowls and then layering them for baking. My girls love vanilla custard so we serve our Peach Crumble over a pool of vanilla custard.
Enjoy !
For Crumble :
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cups unsalted butter
4 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons caster sugar
For Peach Filling :
5 large or 6 medium peaches, peeled, destoned and sliced
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter
This Is What You Do :
Heat the oven to 175 Degrees C. Put all the ingredients of crumble in food processor and mix till the mixture resembles wet sand. OR mix in a bowl, breaking the butter with your fingers and mixing everything thoroughly till crumbly. Refrigerate till you prepare the peach filling.
Take an oven proof pan 8×8 square and add all the ingredients of peach filling. Mix till peach slices are coated with sugars, flour and butter. Spread the crumble mix over peach filling evenly. Bake for around 35 minutes or till the top is golden brown. Serve hot with ice cream or chilled with warm vanilla custard.
